Welcome to Year 5!
Dear Parents and students,
Welcome to year 5 in 2010! We hope you had a lovely restful break.
This term, in our integrated unit, we will be focusing on survival. We will investigate various shipwrecks with a strong focus on literacy, problem-solving and organisational skills. The unit encourages students to respect the rights and opinions of others as well as encouraging students to share their knowledge and ideas with peers.
Our Religion unit, titled ‘Exploring the Texts’ provides students with opportunities to explore narratives from the Bibles, as well as some parables and miracles from the New Testament.
In English students will be extending their knowledge of letter blends, sentence building, grammar and comprehension. Students will be working towards developing their writing skills. In term 1 we will be focusing on the genres of personal recount and narratives.
In maths, students will continue to develop their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In particular we will be focusing on place value as we move towards working with four-digit numbers.
In art we will be focusing on shape, colour and line (watch out Picasso) and in health we will be looking at ourselves and our relationships with others.
We are looking forward to being really energetic this term, with swimming lessons starting this Thursday (04.02.’10) and the 3-7 school swimming carnival being held on 18th March. If you are able to help with supervision to and from the swimming pool this Thursday please send us a little note. 5P require parent helpers between 11:15 - 12:20 and 5M between 11:45 - 12:50.
A letter asking for volunteers will be sent home this week.
Sport Uniforms Days for term 1 are Tuesday and Thursday.
Our library borrowing day is Friday (please remember to bring your library bag) and Music lessons will be held on a Tuesday and Friday.
Year 5 will also have a 30min Japanese lesson every Tuesday.
Homework will be handed out every Friday and is required to be completed and handed in the following Thursday.
A weekly timetable has been sent home with students summarising this information.
Birthdays Reminder:
If you plan on bringing in a birthday treat for your child to share with their classmates, we would appreciate individual food items, i.e. patty cakes, ice blocks, lollies, etc as a cake is too difficult to divide between the class. 5P contain 25 students (and TEACHER), 5M 26 students (and TEACHER!).
IMPORTANT:
A student in year 5 is anaphylactic NO treats containing traces of nuts are to be supplied.
We know people don’t always like to blow their own horn but we really enjoy it when people we know have a special talent or expertise to share. This could range from a musical instrument, international cooking, to massage skills. Please DO NOT hide your special talent because Mr Mann and Ms Paterson have great detective skills and we ALWAYS FIND OUT!
We look forward to seeing you at the Parent Information Sessions held this Tuesday (02.02.09), at 7:15 in the year 5 classrooms.
From Larry and Erin
